Kyocera Eco Friendly Copiers and the ECOSYS Design

What makes a Kyocera copier eco friendly
Two design choices do most of the work.
The first is the long life drum, which Kyocera rates at 600,000 pages, so it is treated as a component rather than a consumable and far fewer parts are thrown away over the life of the copier.
The second is what the machine does when nobody is using it, because eco mode and the sleep settings drop the power draw between jobs.
If you are weighing Kyocera against Xerox or any other brand on sustainability, the number to compare is drum life, because a drum rated for the life of the machine is one that never becomes waste.
Kyocera versus Xerox on sustainability
Both brands publish drum life, so the comparison is straightforward.
Kyocera rates its amorphous silicon long life drum at 600,000 pages, and treats it as a component of the machine rather than a consumable you reorder.
Xerox publishes a yield per cartridge instead.
On the VersaLink C7120, C7125 and C7130, which sit in the same A3 colour class, the colour drum is rated at 87,000 pages and the black at 109,000.
Run 600,000 colour pages through each design and one has replaced the drum about seven times.
The other has not replaced it once.
That is the sustainability argument in a single number.
Two caveats.
The 600,000 page figure applies to Kyocera devices fitted with the amorphous silicon drum rather than to every model in the range, so check the spec sheet for the machine you are actually being quoted on.
And drum life is one part of a footprint that also takes in power draw, toner yield and how much of the machine can be recycled at end of life.
The copiers also have double sided printing capabilities, which assist in decreasing paper consumption and waste.
In addition to energy saving features, several Kyocera copiers employ recycled materials.
Kyocera’s Copiers Help to Reduce Environmental Impact

Kyocera is quite proud of their environmental commitment.
This is shown by their copiers, which lower energy use and waste output.
Kyocera’s recycling programme takes many copier components, which are subsequently dismantled and repurposed inside the company.
This helps reduce waste and pollution from industrial operations.
What Kyocera publishes about its own targets
Kyocera Group Environmental Safety Policy:
Kyocera aims to contribute to a sustainable society by researching, developing, producing, and expanding products that reduce environmental impact throughout their life cycles.
ECOSYS Technology: Kyocera’s ECOSYS technology aims to reduce environmental impact without compromising on quality or cost savings.
Green Solutions: Kyocera has taken Best A4 Print Manufacturer four times running at the Frank Awards, run by The Cannata Report.
Water Risk Response and Recycling Activities: Kyocera tracks and manages business activities and environmental impact.
The features that cut energy use and waste
Long Life Components
Kyocera incorporates long life components, including the amorphous silicon photoreceptor drums, which increases product longevity and minimises environmental impacts.
Kyocera rates that drum at up to 600,000 pages across a range of its devices.
They have been working on these durable designs for about 25 years, reducing the need to continually replace costly components.
Eco friendly Toner
Kyocera uses a nano particle structure micro toner that reduces the burden on the environment.
Their exclusive formula does not include the use of organic solvents and only requires a very small amount of water during production.
The toner can be attached to the paper at low temperature, reducing power consumption during printing.
Reusing Emptied Toner Cartridges
The emptied black toner cartridge can be used as a container for wasted toner, reducing waste generation and costs while saving resources.
Kyocera’s toner only approach helps keep toner cartridges out of landfill.
Lead free Components
Kyocera uses lead free wires and solders due to environmental concerns, reducing hazardous wastes.
Reduced Energy Consumption
Kyocera’s copiers are equipped with an energy saving controller and various energy saving settings to minimise standby power consumption and TEC values.
The device detects when you approach it, wakes up from power saving sleep mode, and turns on the operation panel automatically.
It returns to sleep mode when the user walks away to save more energy.
You can also conserve power by switching your device to sleep mode with one touch operation keys on the panel.
Kyocera publishes typical energy consumption figures for each model, so you can compare a current machine against an older one before you choose.
Toner only System
Kyocera designed the first printers to use a toner only system, avoiding the need to replace plastic cartridges, which reduces environmental impact.

All Of Their Copiers Are RoHS Compliant.
Their copiers comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive, known as RoHS.
It limits hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment that could harm the environment.
To lower its environmental imprint and save money on energy expenditures, the firm has implemented measures such as efficient lighting systems and the usage of solar power.
